I have a new mailing address:
William Brotman, RPSC
Winter-Over McMurdo Station
PSC 469 Box 700
APO AP 96599-1035
The reason for the new address is that if you mark it WINTER OVER, then it gets priority. The last date that ANY mail will arrive is February 21st so if you want me to receive anything from you, box or envelope, then you need to probably send it from the US by February 1st. I've seen somethings get here in 10 days, but that is when everything runs smoothly. Often, they don't. Other things have taken six weeks to make it down. If for some reason, I don't get it in February, I'll get it in August.
In short, I won't be getting anything but electronic mail from late February though the end of August. Wow, we will actually be isolated except for the other 140 people I'll be living with. I think I only have 220 more days down here.

wow - that is quite a daunting thought for us mere landlubbers here in the UK! do you have many penguins there? we saw the March of the Penguins film and were very touched at how they all huddle together in the winter season i thought it was always winter there!). maybe the humans should all huddle together too!
ReplyDeleteThere are huge penguin colonies within 20 miles of here. However, our base is so large that it has a large ecological footprint so it wasn't built near any of the colonies. To date, I've seen three penguins.
ReplyDeleteI heard a couple nights ago we had 30 penguins strolling on the ice near town so sometimes we have them, sometimes we don't. As the summer season progresses and the sea ice melts bringing the open ocean closer, we will see more penguins, seals, and hopefully whales. It is just 4 miles away now.
With 220 days left, are you counting the days down with excitement or a bit of remorse that it's almost over?
ReplyDeleteBrody,
ReplyDeleteWAY back when......... I was in Vietnam it was traditional to keep a short timers calendar to help count down the last 100 days. I'll try to hunt one up for you.

Hello there! I think I found a blog by you about cycling on Turkey's Med coast. I am going to be there in a couple weeks, and am looking for information on whether its safe/doable to ride along the coastal roads between Gocek/Fethiye and Olympos. Do you know anything about these roads? I'm doing a blue cruise with the family in a couple weeks, and am hoping that I could bring a road or cross bike, and ride point to point or loops out and back from time to time while the boat is in transit.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate any advice you may be willing to offer.
Best regards,
Brook
